Combining Capital and Passion – Dennis Ensing, CEO SWO Angels

Dennis Ensing believes in the power of collaborative co-investment – sharing the risk of investment while leveraging the expertise of colleagues in other fields. That belief led him to co-found SWO Angels in 2008.

An accountant by training, Ensing has real world entrepreneurial experience, launching two companies in the early 1990s. “Starting those businesses made me realize what I really enjoy is the opportunity to influence and see the results of what capital and passion can do first-hand. Successful investments require a really good combination of the two things.”

“Too many people have a technology or product in search of a problem,” said Ensing. “You have to look at it the other way. The most successful companies we have around us, like Tesla or Tylenol, all solve fundamental problems.” The question of whether a company solves a real problem is a key factor he looks for when vetting a potential investment opportunity.

Most recently, Ensing was CEO of TransGaming Inc., now FinDev Inc. (TSX-V: FDI), a digital media company he helped start and take public that was a leader in the exploding cloud-based video game market. In the past 10 years alone he was involved in over $100 million of financing and M&A transactions – an activity he continues as a Partner with DCF Capital Partners. Prior to that he was also a Vice President in the Corporate Finance practice of Ernst and Young where he provided transaction advisory services to emerging companies.

Ensing is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors at Sensory Technologies, whose platform is used by the health care system to enable patients to stay in the comfort of their own home while receiving needed medical support. He also serves as the Chair of the Ted Rogers School of Management Entrepreneurship Program Advisory Council, a group focused on shaping and enabling the next generation of global business leaders.

Ensing is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Chartered Business Valuator and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. He is also a CEO member of AceTech Ontario.
